American Studies Minor

Faculty

Coordinator: Dr. Farrell O'Gorman

Program Mission

The minor in American Studies will provide students with the foundation for a sound, substantial understanding of American society and culture. Students will come to know and understand essential historical periods, texts, events, and individuals that are demonstrative of American thought and experience over time. Interdisciplinary in nature, the program integrates history, literature, and politics and offers significant opportunities for reflection on American identity in relation to the Catholic intellectual tradition. Via study, analysis, dialogue, research, writing, and presentations, students will master the tools necessary to be strong educators; strong practitioners of and advocates for the public humanities; and strong citizens who are prepared to speak conscientiously and effectively in the public square.

Overview

Students must complete 15 hours of approved courses with a grade of “C” or better. In doing so, students are required to complete at least 3 hours of coursework in each of the following subject areas: history, literature, and politics. Moreover, at least nine credits of the minor must be unique and not applied to another credential per College policy. It is the student’s responsibility to see that all degree requirements for graduation are fulfilled.

NOTE: Many students will complete PO201: American Constitution as part of the core curriculum. This course does not count toward the minor.
