Latin Minor

Overview

Students minoring in Latin earn sixteen (16) credit-hours in the language including a three-credit capstone course. This capstone is either extended guided practice in writing original Latin (LA301), or an extended experience of reading original Latin texts of great historical importance (LA302).

First-year courses (LA101 and LA102) are taught in BAC classrooms, while most subsequent course offerings are provided in live, online, synchronous format by BAC’s partner institution, the Veterum Sapientia Institute (VSI). Students enjoy on-campus enrichment activities provided by the Vivens Latin Club.

The Latin minor enhances the student’s academic portfolio with a limited but coherent body of work encompassing the basic grammar, syntax, and essential vocabulary of Latin. This minor complements majors in Greek, English, History, Philosophy, Theology, and any of the sciences. It is also useful to students preparing for master’s or doctoral programs in the humanities, medicine, or the law. Students planning to enter teaching, pastoral ministry or related careers after graduation will also find it a helpful part of their overall academic credentials.

To remain in good standing in the program, students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 and receive no more than one passing grade below “C” in courses submitted for minor credit.

It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that all minor requirements are fulfilled before expected graduation.
