Program Mission
The Politics faculty strives to produce thoughtful and well-informed citizens of the nation and the world. We offer students the opportunity to develop a knowledge of politics in grounded in a deep understanding of the perennial questions of political life. Following the Catholic, Benedictine intellectual tradition, the department looks to the promise of human community today while finding inspiration in the greatest thinkers of the past. Emphasis is placed on the serious study of the great works of political philosophy, as well as the writings, documents, and deeds of American thinkers and statesmen. We offer moot court, as well as courses in the American founding, political philosophy, international relations, public policy, and institutions such as Congress and the presidency.
Program Goals
The Department places a premium on intelligent analysis and depth of thought. Students are challenged to write clearly and accurately and to improve their ability to articulate their thoughts in speech. We believe that these skills are essential for preparation for future professional success. A major in politics provides an excellent foundation for careers or advanced study in many fields, including law, business, politics, public administration, the armed services, philanthropy, social work, teaching, and academia.
