CC350 Topics Christianity and Culture
This course will explore the complex relationship between Christianity and culture in Ireland, with attention to selected major historical moments and literary figures. Through engagement with a series of literary and historical texts, it will consider the ways in which Christianity and culture interacted with and shaped one another over the course of fifteen hundred years. Specific subtopics will include the introduction of Christianity to Ireland; the "Golden Age" of the early Irish church; the Reformation and English conquest of Ireland; Christianity and Irish nationalism; Northern Ireland and the Troubles. Among other avenues, these topics will be approached through engagement with the literary output of major figures such as St. Patrick, Micheal O Cleirigh OFM, Jonathan Swift, James Joyce, and Seamus Heaney.
