HI415 Edmund Burke, Enlightenment and Mdrn Rev

This course will consider the American and French revolutions of hte late eighteenth century from the perspective of contemporary European thinkers such as Edmund Burke, Tom Paine, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. How similar did these revolutions appear to Europeans, in their origins and aims, and what was their longer-term effect on politics, religion, and society in Modern Europe?
