MU200 Understanding Sacred Music

This course is an exploration of sacred music. It will explore the history of polyphony and other styles of liturgical music, and analyze why some musical genres are more appropriate for the liturgy than others. Students will learn what the Church instructs with reference to Church documents on sacred music, including Tra le Sollecitudini, Musicam Sacram, and Sacrosanctum Concilium. In addition, the course will consider the theology of iconographic art, and how this might be applied to sacred music.
