B.A. in Greek

Program Mission

The Greek Major aims to develop proficiency in passive and active Greek, while also giving the student familiarity with the broad scope of Greek literature from its classical form to its use by the Church Fathers and in the liturgy of the Eastern churches. As part of our students' development, they will gain exposure to the original sources of a liberal arts education, sources which contribute to the formation of well-rounded Christians within the great tradition of Western civilization. Our teaching is grounded in the living Latin pedagogical method pioneered by Hans Ørberg, as developed for Greek by Santiago Carbonell Martínez. This program is offered in coordination with Veterum Sapientia Institute.

Program Learning Goals:

  1. To impart mastery of reading, writing, and speaking the Greek language, according to each successive level ("Mastery at Level").
  2. To familiarize the students within the fundamental texts of Greek literature from the classical era, including the Patristic and liturgical Greek.
  3. To foster enthusiasm for sharing the wisdom of the Greek tradition with others.

Student Learning Objectives:

  1. To master the essential vocabulary of the Greek language, and the specialized vocabulary of Christian Greek.
  2. To master Greek morphology, including rare and late forms.
  3. To master the syntax of the Greek complex sentence, both in reading and in writing.
  4. To be able to appreciate and explain the different styles of Greek prose (rhetorical, philosophical, historical, etc.)
  5. To have a ready understanding of the rules of Greek prosody, and the principal metrical patterns (epic, elegiac, and lyric).
  6. To be familiar with the Church's Greek prayer style as found in its liturgical expression.

Students may have no more than two passing grades in the major below a "C" and a minimum GPA of 2.0
