Program Mission
The Politics faculty strives to produce thoughtful and well-informed citizens of the nation and the world. We offer students the opportunity to develop a knowledge of politics in grounded in a deep understanding of the perennial questions of political life. Following the Catholic, Benedictine intellectual tradition, the department looks to the promise of human community today while finding inspiration in the greatest thinkers of the past. Emphasis is placed on the serious study of the great works of political philosophy, as well as the writings, documents, and deeds of American thinkers and statesmen. We offer courses in the American founding, political philosophy, international relations, public policy, institutions such as Congress and the Presidency, as well as experiential learning opportunities like Moot Court and internships.
Program Goals
The Politics Department aims to empower students to engage in intelligent analysis of the essential questions of political life and enable them to communicate these ideas effectively. Further, we seek to equip students with knowledge of the fundamentals of the discipline in the subfields of political philosophy, American politics, law, and international relations. Finally, we strive to prepare students not only for success in their careers or graduate studies, but also to lead lives of integrity and to be a blessing to themselves and their communities.
Politics is offered both as a major and a minor.
International Relations is offered as a minor.
