EN316 Poetics: Reading & Writing
Prerequisite: RH 104. With rigorous attention to meter and rhyme, this course introduces students to the wide range of poetic forms and conventions that have shaped English poetry for centuries, inviting students to engage in the literary conversation through their own creative writing. We will explore seminal poets who use conventions such as alliterative verse, sonnets, villanelles, and limericks. Furthermore, we will study poets who pioneer forms of their own, with special attention to contemporary poets who bring poetic form into modern parlance. Throughout the semester, students will write poems of their own, creating a portfolio of creatively formalistic poetry that brings their own voice into the poetic tradition.
