CJ440 Criminal Law

Prerequisite: CJ 201 and Jr/Sr standing or permission of the instructor This course will study the evolution and current status of susbtantive criminal law in the United States as it defines what is considered to be criminal behavior. The general principles of criminal liability will be examined, including the definitions and elements of specific crimes as well as the most common defenses raised. The role of common law, case law, and statutory law will be examined as well as the application of criminal law on both a federal and state level. Emphasis will be upon the study of important legal decisions and their effect on society. Decisions of English and American Courts will be analyzed to interpret the rules and doctrines that make up the substantive ciminal law.
