EN419 The Short Story and Related Forms

Prerequisites: EN 211, EN 212 The short story genre did not arrive on teh modern literary scene ready-made, and today, brief prose forms are as popular as difficult to classify and encompass as flash fiction, prose poetry, mini-essays and Tweets. This course will survey the stunning variety of short prose writing from its earliest examples to the most recent representatives. As we examine this history we will answer such questions as: Does size matter in literature? How does form affect content? How can one best articulate the difference between a story, a fable, a parable, and a novella?
