HS361 Substance Abuse & Addictions I

Prerequisite: C- or higher in HS201 or PC201. This course is an introduction to substance abuse and addictions, and includes the biological, neurological, genetic, social, and environmental mechanisms of substance abuse and addiction. DSM-5 criteria for substance-related and addictive disorders are reviewed in addition to commonly occurring comorbid disorders. Special attention is given to increasing students’ ethical and cultural understanding of the problem and its treatment. The reciprocal impact of addictions on the micro and macro systems is discussed.
