EN405 Old English Language and Literature
Prerequisites:
RH104 and
EN211
In this course, students will be introduced to Old English, the language spoken and written in England from about the mid-fifth century until several decades after the Norman Conquest. No prior knowledge is required, though some experience in learning another language is recommended. Once we have covered enough grammar and vocabulary, we will then translate and discuss some Old English literature. We will begin with shorter, simpler texts that offer insight into early medieval English society and culture. But eventually, we will tackle the epic Beowulf, first in translation but then in a selection of important excerpts in the original language. Along the way, students will explore the history of the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and Vikings and learn about the manuscripts that contain our texts.
