HI346 Global History of Mdrn Catholic Missions

In this course students will survey the history of Catholic Missions in the modern era. First, we will examine missionary efforts carried out between the 16th and 18th centuries in the Americas and Asia, mostly by traditional religious orders such as the Jesuits and the Franciscans. Then, we will explore initiatives that developed in the context of European colonial rule in the 19th and 20th centuries, principally carried out by newly founded missionary orders. Finally, we will investigate contemporary Catholic Evangelization in our post-colonial and post-Vatican II globalized era.
